Clip-in hair extensions: how to choose the right length, fullness and set for your hair

Clip-ins can change your hair by dinner and be gone by bedtime. The skill is choosing how much hair to add.

Clip-in hair extensions can change the length, fullness and shape of your hair in minutes, then come out again at the end of the day. The most convincing result comes from choosing a set that suits the hair you already have, which is rarely the longest or fullest one available.

Most beauty decisions come with a waiting period. A haircut takes months to grow out, a colour takes weeks to fade, and even a new fringe asks for patience. Clip-in hair extensions ask for none. Shoulder-length hair can be long by dinner, fine ends can look substantial for a wedding, and a ponytail can gain real weight for an evening. By the next morning the decision has been reversed and nothing about your own hair has changed.

That freedom is exactly why clip-ins are worth choosing carefully. Because you can change the amount of hair as often as you like, the useful skill is knowing how much to add. Beauty Works makes its clip-ins from 100% Remy human hair in lengths from 16" to 26", and its sets differ as much in how much hair they hold as in how long it is.

Start with the hair you already have

Good clip-in hair extensions continue the shape of your own haircut. When they sit beneath it as a separate layer, the eye finds the join.

Fine or medium hair usually needs less added weight than people expect. Beauty Works' Deluxe Clip-Ins are a set of three lightweight wefts, 140g in all, designed for natural volume and length and suggested for first-time wearers. The Double Hair Set holds considerably more: six wefts weighing between 180g and 290g depending on the length, with a seventh weft in the 26" set. Beauty Works describes it as its fullest set, designed for maximum volume and thickness, and suitable for fine, medium and thick hair.

Neither is the more natural choice in itself. Very fine hair can struggle to hide a heavy set, because the wefts need enough of your own hair lying over them. Thick hair has the opposite problem: too little added hair creates length without enough density, and the point where your own hair ends starts to show. The amount that looks right is the amount your finished hairstyle needs.

Length changes the whole proportion

The longest set makes the most obvious statement, but the same length looks quite different depending on where your own hair stops. If your hair already falls well below the shoulders, several added inches continue a line that is already there. A shorter, blunt cut asks far more of the blend, because the added hair has to carry on from a clear edge. Your height and the shape of the cut change the effect too.

This is why a slightly shorter set can look more expensive than the longest one available. The added length still changes the silhouette, while your own hair has enough presence to carry it. Deluxe Clip-Ins come in 16", 18" and 20", and the Double Hair Set in 18", 20", 22" and 26".

When the length is already right

Plenty of women who wear clip-ins are perfectly happy with their length. What they want is the fullness they have near the root carried all the way to the ends. A blunt lob loses its graphic edge when the baseline thins, and waves fade out towards the ends when there is not enough hair for the movement to travel through.

For that, a full set can be more than you need. The Beauty Works x Huda Barely There® Mix & Match collection breaks clip-ins into smaller pieces, the Mini, Duo and Volumiser wefts, so you can add hair only where it is missing. It is a useful way to think about clip-ins in general: you can change one proportion quietly and leave the rest of your hair alone. If the proportion you want to change is at the front, our guide to clip-in fringes and hair toppers looks at trying a fringe without cutting one.

Colour is where the blend holds or gives way

With clip-ins, the colour that matters most sits in the band of hair lying over the top weft, where your own lengths meet the added hair. That is where the eye travels, and where a shade that looked right in the packet can suddenly read a tone too warm or too flat.

Beauty Works' clip-ins come in more than 60 shades, including highlighted, rooted, balayage and ombré blends. Matching help is free, by WhatsApp message or a booked video call with Beauty Works' in-house specialists, and paid swatches let you hold a shade against your own lengths in daylight. A multi-tonal shade that looks busy in your hand often blends more quietly once it is in, because it echoes the variation your own hair already has.

Let the hairstyle decide the placement

Nothing says every weft in a set has to go in. Placement should answer the hairstyle. Fuller ends call for hair lower on the head, a half-up style needs enough cover beneath the section you pin, and around the temples, where hair is often finest, a smaller piece usually hides better than a wide weft.

Once everything is in, move. Turn your head, lift the hair and put it into the style you mean to wear, because clip-ins have to stay hidden when the hair moves as well as when it sits still.

Style your own hair and the clip-ins together

Because Beauty Works' clip-ins are human hair, they can be curled, waved, straightened and blow-dried like your own, and the blend is usually most convincing when everything is styled at once. A wave running through your hair and the added hair helps two lengths merge, and a smooth blow-dry does the same by giving every strand one direction. Whatever the finish, the clip-ins should look as though they were there when the hairstyle began.

Keep the heat in proportion. Beauty Works advises heat protection and no more than 180°C on its hair extensions, and our guide to styling tools for hair extensions explains why longer barrels make that easier.

Looking after hair that lives in a drawer

Clip-ins spend most of their life off the head, which gives you more control over their condition than any other kind of hair extension. Beauty Works' terms of sale describe them as designed for occasional wear only, and its clip-in pages suggest washing them every 10 to 20 wears or whenever product builds up. Unlike most professionally fitted hair, they take its Pearl Nourishing Shampoo with sulphates, which its washing guide recommends to clear product build-up.

Brush them through before you put them away, let them dry completely and store them carefully between wears. Clip-ins pushed into a drawer come out as a project, while clip-ins stored with care come out ready to wear. With that kind of attention, Beauty Works says a set can last many months, and up to a year. Our guide to hair extension care covers the rest of the routine.

The TOSE edit

Clip-in hair extensions are at their most interesting when they give you freedom more than length. They let you see what fuller hair does to a haircut, what a few extra inches do to a dress, or what a heavier ponytail does to an otherwise simple style, and then they let you return to your own hair before bed.

Choosing well is mostly an exercise in restraint: enough length to create the effect, enough density to complete the shape, and a colour that disappears into what is already there. Get those three right and the clips stay temporary while the result looks entirely like your own hair.
