Hair extension care: keeping added hair soft, smooth and worth looking after

Hair extensions no longer get natural oil from the scalp. That makes the routine do the work, and the routine depends on the method.

Hair extension care begins with one important difference: added hair is no longer connected to the scalp that once supplied its natural oils. Washing, conditioning, brushing and heat protection carry more of the work of keeping the softness, movement and shine you chose the hair for in the first place.

Natural hair has an invisible advantage. Sebum from the scalp travels gradually along each strand, conditioning it long before a mask or oil comes anywhere near the bathroom. Hair extensions have lost that relationship, so the condition they keep depends on how they are washed, handled, styled and protected.

Shop hair extensions, styling tools and haircare from Beauty Works Online, including clip-ins, professional extensions, brushes, curlers, wavers, shampoos, conditioners and treatments.

None of that calls for an elaborate ritual, only for knowing which parts of the routine matter most for the hair you wear. That is the thinking behind Beauty Works' haircare range, whose shampoos, masks, oils and brushes are made for natural hair and hair extensions alike.

Start with your hair extension method

Hair extensions can be attached with tapes, rings, bonds or wefts, or clipped in for the day, and those methods do not all want the same aftercare. Much of the advice online treats them as one, and this is where it goes wrong.

For tape, micro-ring and pre-bonded hair, which at Beauty Works means Tape, Stick Tip, Nanobond® and Flat Tip extensions, Beauty Works recommends its sulphate-free Pearl Nourishing Shampoo, because sulphates can weaken the bond or the ring holding the hair in place. Wefts split. The sulphate-free formula is for the Double Wear® Reversible Weft, XXS Weft, Express-Weft and Gold Flat Track® Weft, while the Celebrity Choice® Weft and Gold Double Weft take Beauty Works' Pearl Nourishing Shampoo with sulphates, which clears the build-up those wefts can collect.

If you are unsure what has been fitted, ask your stylist before you buy a single bottle. Our guides to tape-in, weft and micro-ring hair extensions cover each method in more depth.

Clip-ins live a different life

Clip-in hair extensions spend most of their time out of your hair, which makes their care simpler and, in one respect, easier to forget. They do not need washing every time your own hair does: Beauty Works' clip-in page suggests every 10 to 20 wears, or sooner if styling product builds up, and its washing guide recommends its Pearl Nourishing Shampoo with sulphates. Our guide to clip-in hair extensions covers storing them between wears.

Washing without wearing the hair out

Extension hair still needs washing, because product, oil and the residue of ordinary life build up whether or not some of the hair was added. The difference is that harsh cleansing shows quickly in the lengths, which have no fresh oil from the scalp to make up for it.

Beauty Works advises being a little gentler around the roots, so nothing catches on the attachments, and rinsing thoroughly so product does not build up. For a deeper reset, it suggests its Clarifying Shampoo every four to six weeks. Afterwards, dry the hair fully. Beauty Works advises blow-drying hair extensions rather than leaving them to dry naturally, and with tape, thorough drying also protects the adhesive.

Conditioner belongs where the moisture is needed

The scalp, the attachment area and the ends of the hair can want quite different things at the same time. The lengths usually benefit from moisture, while the attachments call for restraint. Beauty Works' rule is mid-lengths and ends only: conditioner on the roots, bonds or wefts can make the attachments slip.

For the lengths themselves, Beauty Works recommends a deep-conditioning mask once a week, such as its Restore Mask or Pearl Nourishing Argan Oil Mask. That weekly step is where softness, movement and shine are most visibly won or lost.

Oil is the final polish

Hair oil gives an immediate reward: ends look smoother, shine returns and the hair feels easier to handle. Beauty Works suggests its Argan Oil Serum as part of a regular routine, and used that way it does exactly what it promises. If extension hair keeps needing large amounts of oil simply to look healthy, though, something earlier in the routine probably needs attention, whether that is washing, heat, detangling or moisture. A finishing oil is at its best polishing hair that has been well looked after. With tape, keep oil-based products away from the tabs.

Brushing is part of how hair extensions age

Tangling creates friction, and with professionally fitted hair it can also pull against the attachment. Beauty Works makes brushes designed to glide through hair extensions without damaging the natural hair or the attachment, and recommends brushing gently every day. Technique matters as much as the brush. Support the hair with one hand, work gradually through the lengths, and take particular care around tapes, bonds and rings.

Night matters too. Beauty Works advises against sleeping with wet hair, which is one of the quickest ways to wake up to a tangle that began hours earlier.

Heat protection earns its place every time

Human-hair extensions can be styled with heat, which is one of their great advantages and one of the easiest ways to shorten their life. Natural hair eventually grows its damaged ends out. Extension hair keeps them for as long as you wear it, and repeated high heat shows gradually as less shine, rougher ends, more tangling and a finish that becomes harder to make look effortless.

Beauty Works recommends heat protection and no more than 180°C on its hair extensions. Protect first, then use only as much heat as the style needs. Our guide to styling tools for hair extensions explains why many tools go far hotter than that, and how to set them.

Blonde extension hair asks for restraint

Very light extension hair has already been through several chemical processes to reach the shade you bought, so changing it again is something to approach with care. Beauty Works' own position is that any colouring or toning beyond its Anti-Yellow Shampoo is at the wearer's risk.

Its Anti-Yellow Shampoo neutralises brassy tones, and the instructions are specific: no more than two minutes on the hair, because the pigment can leave a purple stain, and no contact with bonded or tape extensions. Those details matter more than the general idea that purple shampoo is good for blondes. Extension hair arrives with a history of its own, and keeping the shade you fell for is often kinder than pushing it colder week after week.

Holidays count as haircare

Sun, chlorine, seawater and extra washing make for a demanding week. Chlorine in particular can leave extensions tangled, discoloured and dry, so Beauty Works advises avoiding swimming in them or, if you do swim, rinsing and conditioning straight afterwards.

The principles stay simple: protect the lengths, rinse after exposure, detangle carefully, and resist turning every pool day into another round of hard washing and hot styling. Holiday hair should come home with you in roughly the condition in which it left.

The TOSE edit

Hair extension care becomes far easier once it stops feeling like a separate beauty discipline. The familiar principles still apply: cleanse properly, put moisture back, detangle gently and protect from heat. What changes is the margin for neglect. The lengths no longer have a scalp feeding them, and professionally fitted hair has an attachment to look after as well.

That makes consistency worth more than complexity. The most beautiful hair extensions are the ones that still move, shine and feel good months into everyday life, long after the packet was opened or the salon chair was left behind.

Common questions

It depends on the method. Beauty Works recommends its sulphate-free Pearl Nourishing Shampoo for tape, micro-ring and pre-bonded extensions, including Stick Tip, Nanobond® and Flat Tip, because sulphates can weaken the attachment.
